As we glide into the Autumn Equinox, there’s a noticeable nip in the air, and the first hints of autumn colour are beginning to appear at the nursery. Behind the scenes, we’re busy preparing for the planting season ahead and finding new homes for our Sherwood Saplings.
Seed processing is also in full swing, and we’ve been making the most of an early and abundant seed collecting season. Some species have produced an incredible amount of seed this year such as rowan, dogwood and crab apples. As well as providing us with the next generation of trees the fruits and berries are an important source of food for birds as we move into autumn and winter. These species are an excellent choice for your garden if you want to support wildlife.
Another exciting project we’ve been working on is our work with heather propagation. We’re delighted to see the first signs of successful growth in our heathland area, with young heather plants beginning to establish themselves. As these plants grow and mature, they will eventually provide us with our own locally grown source of seed and cuttings which will help us to expand and restore more of our precious heathland habitat.
There’s always a buzz of activity happening at the nursery, when one season comes to an end and another begins.
