Growing Sherwood Together: Community Tree Nursery

IMG_7345

What do we grow?

We grow native broadleaved trees and hedgerow species from locally collected seed.

Species include oak (decedents of the mighty major oak itself!), rowan, crab apple and guelder rose, to name a few.

Who is growing the trees?

Community Tree Nursery Officer Izzy, and her dedicated group of volunteers get together every week to collect seeds, process them, and nurture them into saplings at our nursery.

These young trees are then planted within the boundary of the ancient Sherwood Forest.

Why native trees?

By growing trees from locally collected seeds, specifically from ancient and veteran trees, we aim to protect the genetic provenance of the existing forest.

Producing trees locally also reduces the environmental impacts and biosecurity risks  associated with importing stock from abroad, which remains an increasing threat to native woodlands.

At the nursery our trees are truly local, grown by local people. We harness the passion that communities have for this special and iconic landscape, cultivating a lasting connection between the trees they nurture and the forests of the future.  We are committed to the highest standards in biosecurity to protect our UK trees.

Where do we collect seeds?

We primarily collect seed from designated conservation areas, including Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), where we are granted special permission to work within these sensitive environments.

We work with landowners and partners across the county to reduce the need for buying in commercial seedlings.
