A history of success

Sherwood Forest Trust has delivered over 6million pounds worth of benefits for Sherwood since 1995:

The Sherwood Initiative – a 5 year Heritage Lottery funded (HLF) programme consisting of a large number of site based projects throughout the Sherwood area. The scheme comprised of a Landscape Heritage Restoration & Access programme and an Education, Interpretation and Involvement programme.

Specific areas of work:

  • Restoration of Birklands historic landscapes project
  • Sherwood Forest Heathlands
  • Sherwood Forest Wetlands
  • Sherwood Forest Woodlands
  • Sustainable Landscape project
  • Grazing project
  • Archaeology conservation and recording
  • Heritage interpretation
  • Heritage education
  • Orientation centres
  • Sherwood Forest Community Rangers

Over the coming months we will be developing a resource library, adding information sheets detailing the above areas of work.

The Sherwood Initiative also became the catalyst for a number of subsequent projects, these ultimately were the legacy of the programme.   Along with additional further grant funding from Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, HLF, Wren, Biffa, Awards for All, the Big Tree Plant, Ernest Cook Trust, SFT has delivered a comprehensive work programme of activity.  Details of these projects can be found in our annual reports which are located in our Resource Library.

A monthly donation supports our work to protect rare habitats and work with communities in ancient Sherwood Forest.
